DESCRIPTION

Rooff purchased and carried out extensive refurbishment work to the Granary’s adjoining sister building, the Malthouse. The Malthouse formed part of the original ‘Maltings’ complex built for Randalls Malt Roasters in the 1860’s.

The works involved the creation of a number of small and large studios that are let out to artists. Two large studios offer a flexible space that can be used for rehearsals, exhibitions, performances and corporate events, managed by The Boathouse Barking CIC. Smaller studio spaces are let out to individual creative entrepreneurs and artists.

The Granary and the Malthouse, form the heart of the remaining historic buildings situated on the River Roding at Barking Creek and tell a wonderful story of the commercial fishing and Malting heritage of the Barking Town Quay area.

The refurbishment of these locally listed historic industrial buildings formed part of the first phase of the longer term regeneration objectives in the Abbey Road area, and helped kick start the development of the Creative Industries Quarter, which Rooff now own and manage.
