Horniman Museum and Gardens – Natural History Gallery
Forest Hill, SE23

DESCRIPTION
This scheme was part of the Horniman’s Nature + Love project involving works to their Natural History Gallery and Gardens.
Our high-profile project at the Grade II* Listed Horniman Museum involved the transformation of the Natural History Gallery, including new roof works, M&E and internal decoration.
The building itself, the displays and interpretation have changed very little since their original installation, therefore, this project involved the complete dismantling, removal and refurbishment of the historic showcases, as well as a complete refurbishment of the gallery and the roof structure and covering. This work improves accessibility/inclusivity and future proofs the gallery environment, celebrating the natural world. Our project programme was sequenced to allow the full internal works to the Natural History Gallery to take place, whilst a significant number of showcases are refurbished off-site and then reinstalled. This involved the erection of a full internal birdcage scaffold to service the high-level ceiling works within the gallery, whilst protecting remaining large showcases.
We also undertook complete replacement of the lead roof above the Gallery, laying insulation in the upper part to improve thermal efficiency within the Gallery itself. We utilised new flexible gutex boards to maintain the original barrel shape design of the roof.
