International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th. It celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of Women. The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2019 is #BalanceforBetter and is a call to drive gender equality and balance across the world.
As an organisation operating in the construction industry, it is important to us to work towards a gender balanced workforce. Over the past few years we have continued to increase the number of female employees which now includes female heads of departments. #BalanceforBetter
‘Not Just For Boys’
In support of this years International Women’s Day our Marketing and Social Value Coordinator, Lucy Dunne, was invited by the Construction Youth Trust to be part of an all female panel of professionals in the construction industry, to participate in a Q&A session at the Sydney Russell School in Dagenham.
With women making up around 14% of construction industry professionals, according to Go Construct, the panel aimed to challenge a common misconception about the construction industry that it is just for boys and to encourage young women into the industry.
The panel spoke about their own experience of being a woman in the sector and the different careers available to women in construction, as well as the benefits of working in such a diverse industry.
The session received a highly positive feedback from the attendees, with many saying it was a real eye opener to all the opportunities available to women in construction.
