Walthamstow Wetlands was awarded with a Merit at the Structural Steel Design Awards 2018. The project involved refurbishment of the Grade II listed marine engine house, copper mill tower and volunteer hub, creating the largest urban wetland nature reserve in London. The Structural Engineers were Entuitive and the Steelwork Contractor for the project was Gorge Fabrications Ltd.
The Structural Steel Design Awards recognise the high standards of structural and architectural design attainable in the use of steel and its potential in terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation.
Judges Comment
‘The team has successfully given a nod to the former industrial heritage of the building through the use of steel in many manifestations to highlight wayfinding and new interventions throughout this sensitive conversion. The balustrading, made from simple welded plate elements, proves an effective unifying element to the balconies and external spaces.’
